Relevance to the New England Landscape

Nationalist Social Club-131 is a neo-Nazi group started in Massachusetts in November 2019. 131 is alphanumeric code for “Anti communist action.” Chris Hood is a known white supremacist and fascist from Malden, currently living in Pepperell. He has been involved in far right organizing since he was 16.

He was a member of many extreme far right groups, such as the Proud Boys, Patriot Front, and the neo-Nazi group The Base. NSC brands itself as a neo-Nazi street gang formed to combat Jewish people, leftists, LGBTQ+ people, and anyone they deem “anti-white.” NSC functions much like Patriot Front.

Their goal is to create a white ethnostate in New England. They see northern New England as an ideal hub for racist organizing because it is the whitest part of the US. Like other white supremacists, they see COVID-19 denialism and anti-BLM movements as recruiting opportunities. They have also claimed chapters in Texas, Appalachia, Germany, Virginia, and Indiana.

Several NSC members have been arrested for illegal weapons charges and child pornography. Other members have served jail sentences for hate crimes.

NSC believes high visibility and overt racism/bigotry helps them attract new members. NSC started with Patriot Front-style photo ops, banner drops, flyering, graffiti, and vandalism. In 2022, NSC increased their focus on unannounced counter-protests and stand outs. They have targeted:

  • Immigrant communities in Kingston, MA, and Lewiston, ME
  • Leftist bookstores in MA and RI
  • Drag queen and LGBTQ events in NH, MA, and elsewhere

They proudly identify with the original Nazis and other historical racists including the KKK. They understand themselves as a “White Defense Force.” Their public Telegram channel features:

  • Racist, misogynistic, and homophobic/transphobic content
  • Anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, such as “Jews control the government and media”
  • Racist conspiracy theories, such as “Black and Hispanic gangs overrun New England”
  • Anti-communist rhetoric

NSC embraces Nazi imagery (sometimes “ironically” as in their name, a play on “national socialist movement”) and openly espouses white supremacist ideas and policy goals. NSC’s creation also marks the steady shift to more blatant racism by individuals who were previously involved in Boston Free Speech and/or Super Happy Fun America/Resist Marxism.
